Operation Sideswipe – Alice Springs
Thursday 25-Oct-2012 14:47
Police launched Operation Sideswipe yesterday, targeting heavy vehicles in and around Alice Springs.
Sergeant Conan Robertson from the Southern Traffic Operations Unit said the operation involved members from the Southern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID), Dog Operations Unit, Southern Traffic Operations and Motor Vehicle Registry.
“We have had 40 deaths on Territory roads this year, compared to 32 at the same point last year. I am hoping a high visibility Police operation like this, will encourage road users to drive with more care,” Sergeant Robertson said.
“Although the operation ran for just 24 hours, members tested 210 peopled for drink driving and a further six for drug driving. Police arrested a 37-year-old woman who returned a reading of .246% and summonsed four men for traffic related offences. Two of those men had unrestrained children in the car at the time.
“Risking your own life is one thing, but putting your child’s life at risk, well that is just foolish.
“A further eight people received Traffic Infringement Notices. Police also arrested a 56-year-old man found to be in the possession of 110 grams of cannabis.
“The operation may be over, however I continue to urge drivers to take care on Territory roads. Police patrol the streets 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are constantly conducting Random Breath Tests. If you choose to break the law, you will be apprehended.”
