Gunbalanya – Arafura

The area around Gunbalanya is known as Stone Country, a name inspired by the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment and rock formations that emerge from the floodplains surrounding the town. The community is situated near the East Alligator River on a small ridge between coastal black soil plain, marshes and the Arnhem Land Escarpment.

The Gunbalanya Community Education Centre (CEC) provides pre-school, primary and secondary education for the young people of Gunbalanya and adults through its various educational programs.

Health services

The Community Health Centre provides primary health care services to the residents via a mix of Aboriginal health workers, registered nurses, and visits by a district medical officer. All health emergencies are airlifted (via the NT Aerial Medical Service) to Darwin Public Hospital.

Recreation activities

There is a local sport and recreation club and a swimming pool. The spectacular natural wilderness provides a range of recreational bush activities and outdoor pursuits, barramundi fishing and social barbecues. The spectacular natural wilderness provides for other recreational bush activities.
