Pine Creek – Arafura

Pine Creek is a well maintained small town with sealed road access and small shopping/services centre and tourist accommodation. It lies in the foothills west of western Arnhem Land where eucalypt forests and woodlands are interspersed with smaller areas of monsoon rainforest and grasslands.

Fire and Emergency Volunteer Group

A volunteer Fire and Emergency Response Group (FERG) is located in Pine Creek. The FERG are trained in road accident rescue and carry cutting gear and a set of jaws to assist with extrication from vehicles.

Education

The Pine Creek Primary School consists of a preschool and a primary school (transition to year 7). There is an Early Childhood Unit catering for preschool, transition and Year 1, at one end of the school. The nearest high school is in Katherine. Adjacent to the school grounds is a Playgroup that operates 3 days a week.

Health services

The health centre provides a limited and essential health service to the community. The clinic has its own ambulance that conveys patients to Katherine in the first instance but will transport patients to Darwin if needed.

Recreation activities

There are indoor and outdoor sport centres, billiard room and go-kart track. There are numerous annual festivals including the NT Gold Panning Championships, Didgeridoo Jam, rodeo, and races. Pine Creek is on the cusp of the temperate and tropical zones, meaning people from all over the world visit to see the variety of birdlife, including hooded parrots and the Gouldian finch.
