Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC)

History

PCYC Gymnastics

The Darwin Police and Citizens Youth Club Incorporated began in 1952 when a group of police and civilians decided to recondition an old derelict boarding house and make it suitable for youth club activities.

Some hard physical work ensued, such as scrubbing, wall demolishing, and altering and rebuilding of parts of the original building.  Finance was unobtainable and materials could be procured only by using cast off bits and pieces from various government buildings, which were gradually being brought back into reasonable condition following the War.

The then administrator, Mr F J S Wise, was a strong supporter of the project and many Darwin citizens  donated labour, machinery and surplus materials to keep the job moving.   The Police and Citizens Youth Club was opened in 1952 by the Administrator.

Over the first 10 years the Club flourished and became integral to the social life of Darwin, particularly for young people and police.  However, by 1962 the original building deteriorated to such an extent, despite maintenance, that entirely new premises became necessary.  Mr RM Taylor, a local architect, offered his services and late 1962 saw the start of the construction of new premises, which were completed in 1966.

Until 1974 the Club provided 17 activities, including a Pony Club (which began in 1965).  There was an overall membership of 950 boys and girls.

From 1974 to 8 October 1976 the Club was non-functional, owing to the severe damage by Cyclone Tracy, which demolished not only our premises but the whole of Darwin.

After this, the first aim of the Club’s committee was to assess the damage to buildings, equipment and stock.  What at first seemed an impossible task gradually became a reality, with financial help from Lions International, the Darwin Rotary Club, and the Government.

When the Police, Fire and Emergency Services complex was built at Berrimah in 1985, the Police and Citizens Youth Club moved to its new premises at Berrimah, where it remains today.

The Police and Citizen’s Youth Club has always operated as a non-profit organisation.

Judo

Judo

Judo today is principally a highly skilled sport enjoyed by men and women, boys and girls all over the world.  It is an exciting way to get fit.

Judo is over 100 years old and has been an Olympic sport since 1964.   It was presented in Japan as a modern sport and recreational activity in 1882 by Jogoro Kano when he founded the Kodokan School of Judo in Tokyo.

Judo was developed from the ancient art of Jujitsu into a sport for physical and mental education.  The aim of its pupils is to learn techniques and skills whilst improving their all-round fitness and co-ordination.  The idea is to grab and off-balance your opponent and throw them with a recognised technique onto their back.  There are also skills of grappling on the ground (actually special Judo mats) if your opponent cannot be thrown cleanly onto their back.  These skills can be tested in competitions with other players under the rules of the sport.

Today the International Judo Federation, which was founded in 1951, has over 190 member countries, and 20 million players worldwide.  In Australia, the Judo Federation of Australia is the official Judo body.

Whatever your age and fitness level, you can start Judo at the Police and Citizens Youth Club, Vanderlin Drive, Berrimah. The PCYC Judo is the strongest club in the Darwin area with about 55 members and has one of the best quality international standard matting areas within Australia and East Asia .
