Community policing

Community policing is about police engagement with the community, through police strategies and altering the daily activities of operational police officers.

The success of these strategies relies on positive interaction with the community – from business operators to individuals reporting crime. Without the involvement of the community, the NT Police Force cannot operate effectively.

In its purest form, community policing can simultaneously be defined as a philosophy and an organisational strategy. Central to the philosophy of community policing is the emphasis on effective working partnerships with the community.

There are some common elements required for community policing to be effective. These include:

  • the community as the key priority for police work
  • the community as central to the identification and response to crime and safety concerns
  • broadening the police role.
