School Based Policing

School Based Constable in classroom
The Northern Territory School Based Constables Program was born in late 1984 and began with the employment of a constable in the Darwin and rural areas to teach police-related subjects.

After a recommendation to Government by the Juvenile Task Force, the Northern Territory Police stationed a constable at the Casuarina High School in September 1984.

In 2000, the School Based Constables Program was staffed by:

  • one Sergeant Coordinator
  • 20 School Based Constables

Drug education is taught to approximately 20 000 primary school students throughout the Northern Territory.

School Based Constables assist DEET teaching staff in delivering the NT Drug Education Program. School Based Police Officers are involved in the teaching of lessons covering seven core themes, The Legal System, Rights Rules and Responsibilities, Consequences of our Actions, Keeping Ourselves and others safe, Drugs and Alcohol, Community Development and The Role of Police in Society.
