GET READY. GET THRU

Community safety within the Northern Territory environment is everyone’s responsibility and can only be achieved through a partnership between the NT Government and the community. To reduce the risks posed by emergencies and disasters, the Northern Territory Government provides a general level of community safety in a number of ways, including providing the Emergency Services, emergency planning coordinated by the Counter Disaster Council, infrastructure such as hospitals, emergency shelters and land use planning.

Therefore YOUR role in that partnership is to ensure the protection of your family, your home and your possessions.
Once you have established the disasters or emergency situations that could affect you, the next thing you should do is sit down with your family and discuss what you will do in an emergency or disaster. Some of the links below may help you in getting ready:

You will need to find out about all the possible risks associated with each natural disaster and know what is required to prepare accordingly.

We can’t stop the natural disasters or emergencies,
but we can prepare for the worst
and be at our best to survive.
With Emergencies and Disasters in the Territory,
GET READY. GET THRU

EMERGENCY KIT

In most emergencies in the Territory, depending on where you live, you should be able to remain in your home, work or a previously arranged alternative location. In each of these situations you may have to rely on your own resources to get through until the emergency or disaster has passed, or help arrives. Therefore each household MUST have an up-to-date Emergency Kit with First Aid Kit at the ready. The most important thing to remember is to ensure that your kit is able to sustain yourself and every family member for up to 72 Hours or more.

Your Emergency Kit should include:
Emergency items:
  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Portable radio with spare batteries (be sure to check all batteries every 3 months)
  • FIRST AID KIT with any essential medicines that may not be found in a basic kit
  • A change of clothes for each member of the household (wind and waterproof, hats, strong protective closed in shoes)
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Toilet paper and essential toiletries
  • Pet supplies (food and toiletry requirements)
Food and water for each person for at least 72 Hours:
  • Non-perishable foods (dried and canned foods – label cans and don’t forget a can opener!)
  • 5 ltrs of bottled water per person per day (3 days plus)
  • Extra water or plan ways to obtain it for washing and cooking
  • Portable cooker (if using gas remember to have spare canisters or bottles)
  • Cooking and eating equipment and utensils

Check and replace all food and water every 12 months if not used before this time frame

FIRST AID KIT

In the case of a disaster the likelihood of someone getting hurt is dramatically increased and ensuring that you and your family are adequately prepared for such a situation through training and holding a complete First Aid Kit could mean the difference between life and death.

There are a number of agencies and organisations within the Northern Territory that provide First Aid training courses, and it is recommended that you and your family take a First Aid course, with follow up refresher sessions regularly.
