At about 2.30 am the victim, a 19-year-old male Swiss backpacker, was walking down Smith Street past McDonalds when an unknown male drove up in a small white car, approached the victim and allegedly assaulted him. This caused him to fall to the ground and the offender stole the man's wallet before driving off.

The victim sustained grazes to his elbow, bruising and minor lacerations to his mouth and was conveyed by St John Ambulance to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

The alleged offender was described to police as of Asian or Aboriginal appearance, 178 cm tall, slim build and wearing a white t-shirt.
