Community Unrest - Wadeye

Police

Additional Police members have been sent to Wadeye to restore calm in the wake of a large disturbance in the community this morning.

Approximately 200 residents clashed as family group tensions hit a peak outside the front of the Community Store at around 9.40 am today.

A female employee at the store was injured during the incident and was treated at the Wadeye clinic.

Superintendent Daniel Bacon of the Arnhem and Western Division said the recent hostilities were directly related to tension between family groups in the wake of the death of local man in September.

“Extra Police have again been deployed to the Community to assist in the apprehension and arrest of offenders in relation to this disturbance.

“At this stage Wadeye is relatively calm, but tensions are still high between family groups.

“For the time being, extra police resources will remain a fixture in Wadeye until Police and leaders in the community can mediate a peaceful outcome,” Superintendent Bacon concluded.
