Crocodile Attack - Nhulunbuy - Update

Police

The search for a nine-year-old boy feared killed by a crocodile in Arnhem Land has been suspended.

Authorities launched a search for the child on Saturday, after reports he had been taken by a crocodile, about 80 kilometres south of Nhulunbuy.

“Police joined forces with local rangers, sea rangers, Parks and Wildlife and community volunteers in the hope of finding the child alive.” Said Superintendent Michael White.

“While there were initial sightings of the crocodile believed to be responsible for the attack, no further sightings have been confirmed over the last two days.”

“A helicopter was utilised today in the effort of spotting the crocodile from the air.”

“Ongoing observation operations will continue in the hope of locating the crocodile. If the animal returns to the area, it will be destroyed.” Said Supt White.

“This is a tragic outcome for the tiny community and reinforces the threats people face in top end waterways.”
