Disturbance - Mutitjulu

Police

NT Police have arrested six people in relation to a disturbance in Mutitjulu yesterday.

Superintendent Peter Gordon said a disturbance started in the community after a quantity of alcohol was stolen from a licenced premise in Yulara on Christmas day.

“In the early hours of yesterday morning local Police were called to domestic assault incident and on arrival observed a group of 30 to 40 people fighting amongst themselves.

“As members approached the group they turned their attention towards Police, throwing rocks, bottles and sticks at the Police vehicle.

“Additional Police resources from Yulara and Warakurna arrived in the community to assist local members; however they were turned on again by the group. Damage consisted of a smashed windscreen caused when a rock was thrown and the vehicle was struck with an iron bar.

“A female nurse, who was treating a woman who had been assaulted, was also attacked during the disturbance. It is alleged the nurse was punched to the head and threatened with an iron bar. The nurse and the female victim where conveyed to the Mutitjulu clinic for treatment.

“Additional Police from Kulgera and Imanpa were dispatched to assist. A number of arrests have been made as a result of the disturbance:

·         A 40-year-old man arrested and charged in relation to the offences of engage in violent conduct, armed with offensive weapon and disorderly behaviour.

·         A 44-year-old female arrested and charged in relation to the offences of engage in violent conduct, armed with offensive weapon and disorderly behaviour

·         A 33-year-old female arrested and charged in relation to the offences of violent conduct, armed with offensive weapon, disorderly behaviour, criminal damage and assault Police x 2

·         An 18-year-old female expected to be charged in relation to unlawful entry.

·         A 22-year-old female  arrested and charged in relation to the offences of aggravated enter building intent to commit offence and stealing

·         A 36-year-old male arrested and charged with assault female and breach DVO

“Police are disgusted at this latest attack on Police and Nurses based in Mutitjulu who were responding to calls for assistance from the more vulnerable members of that community. We anticipate the female offender responsible for the assault on the nurse will be apprehended shortly. Police also anticipate arrests in respect to the assault of two other women who were set upon by their drunken spouses.”
