Northern Territory Operation Unite Concludes

Police

The two day blitz on alcohol fuelled violence and anti social behaviour, Operation Unite has concluded with 170 people taken into protective custody across the Northern Territory.

In excess of 180 Police Officers boosted existing patrols across the Territory with a focus on high visibility policing in and around licensed premises.

Acting Commander Matt Hollamby of the Darwin Metropolitan Command said there was a generally positive community reaction to the Operation.

“Across the Territory, 34 people were arrested for drug and alcohol related incidents and 436 litres of alcohol was tipped out by Police

“The weekend operation saw 1881 drivers breath tested resulting in 35 people arrested for drink driving. Police also issued 82 infringement notices for other drink driving and traffic related offences.

“Whilst Northern Territory Police are pleased with the overall public response to Operation Unite, there is still room for improvement.

“It is always surprising when we advertise that Police will be targeting drink drivers, people still do it and place themselves and the community in danger.”

“With Christmas parties and festive celebrations over the next few weeks, I hope the Territory can learn something from this weekends experience and some good can come from it.

“Everybody should feel safe, be safe and have a good night out without others ruining it for them.” Commander Hollamby said.
