Triple Fatal Crash - Hermannsburg

CORRECTION: The location of the crash occurred 3.8km west of the boundary fence, not 3.8km west of Hermannsburg as initially reported in the media release below... Media Release updated at 2000 02/01/13. Three people have died overnight in a car crash near Hermannsburg.

Superintendent Brent Warren said around 8:30pm last night a White Commodore has approached a marked Police vehicle near the boundary of the restricted area 45 kilometres east of Hermannsburg.

“Police attempted to stop the car and a short pursuit was commenced, however due to speeds reached by the Commodore Police have aborted their attempts to apprehend the vehicle.

“The Police vehicle continued along Larapinta Drive and located the Commodore on its roof 3.8 kilometres west from Hermannsburg.

“Two females aged 26 and 32 were ejected from the vehicle and a male aged 30 remained trapped in the vehicle. All three were declared deceased at the scene.

“Two other people were taken to Alice Springs Hospital for medical treatment.  A 26 year old male has been discharged from Hospital and is now in Police custody, whilst a 35 year old female remains in Hospital receiving treatment.

Police are treating the fatalities as a death in Police presence and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The Northern Territory road toll now stands at 48 compared to 39 for the same time last year.

No further information will be released at this stage.
