Kava Seizure - Gove

A 32-year-old male will appear in the Gove Court today, following a large kava seizure yesterday.

Superintendent Michael White of the Arafura Division said Police received information relating to kava importation and attended the airport at around 8:00 last night.

“Police witnessed a man acting suspiciously as he left the terminal with only carry on luggage,” Superintendent White said.

“The man was apprehended in the car park and further investigations led to the location of a second bag, left behind on the luggage carousel.

“He was located in possession of kava and a further search of all his luggage resulted in a total of 44kg of kava, separated into 597 individual deal bags.

“The man was arrested and charged with possess commercial quantity of kava and supply commercial quantity of kava.

“If sold in local communities, this kava had the potential street value of $60,000.

“This is an excellent result by local Police who continue to focus on the distribution of illicit substance in remote communities.”
