Operation Thumper, which was established to target alcohol related offences and anti social behaviour in Katherine, and has proven to be a great success.

Superintendent Michael White of the Arafura Division said the operation, which began on Wednesday morning and ran through til Sunday morning, saw the arrest of 38 people.

“Of the 38 arrested, seven were for aggravated assault, eight were for breaches of Domestic Violence Orders and a further eight were for drink driving offences,” Superintendent White said.

“Police were kept busy as they tipped out more than 510 litres of alcohol and issued 74 infringement notices.

“Police also breath tested 414 people and issued 13 Summary Infringement Notices and 14 Traffic Infringement Notices. Another 125 people were taken into protective custody.

“This operation has been a resounding success, seeing numerous people put behind bars for a number of different offences.

“Police will continue to conduct these types of operations in a bid to quell anti social behaviour in our town.”
