Firearm haul - Tennant Creek

Police

A large cache of firearms, ammunition and gun powder has been seized from a home in Tennant Creek by Northern Territory Police.

There was a significant number of firearms, firearm components as well as, large quantities of ammunition and gun powder located by members of the Tennant Creek Investigations Unit during a search warrant at a residential property.

It is alleged the owner of the items failed to meet storage requirements and did not have a license for firearms and/or ammunition, which was subsequently seized.

Detective Acting Sergeant Caragh Hen said it took investigators two days to collect the firearms and firearm related items.

“The home was just littered with guns, gun parts and ammunition – it is one of the more unusual jobs we’ve seen lately,” said D/A/Sgt Hen

“This is a complex investigation due to the extensive number of items and as such investigations continue.”

“There was no indication these firearms posed any risk to the public, however it remains illegal to possess firearms, ammunition and gun powder without a license and the relevant storage requirements.”

Under NT Legislation, gun owners must take all reasonable precautions to ensure that their firearms are kept safely, that they are not lost or stolen and that they do not come into the possession of persons not authorised to possess them.
