Fatal crash – Coolalinga

Police

Northern Territory Police are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in Coolalinga overnight.

Around 12:15am, police received reports that the driver of a Toyota Starlet, carrying 3 youths, lost control of the vehicle while travelling southbound on the Stuart Highway in Coolalinga.

The vehicle collided with a culvert and rolled, ejecting both the driver and one occupant.

A 15-year-old male occupant was declared deceased at the scene.

The 14-year-old driver suffered serious injuries and was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

The third occupant, another 14-year-old male, suffered minor injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said “Major Crash detectives worked through the night and remain on scene. Road restrictions are in place around the Stuart Highway in Coolalinga, with motorists being diverted onto Virginia Road. Diversions are expected to remain until 10am this morning.

“Investigations so far have confirmed the vehicle is not stolen and that it was observed driving erratically just prior to the crash.

“This is a tragic incident and support is being provided to the families of the children and to the first responders and members of the public who were on scene.

“Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the vehicle in the area at the time, especially if you have dash cam footage, to make contact on 131 444. Please quote reference 23334120.”
