Fatal pedestrian strike - Mataranka

Northern Territory Police are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in Mataranka overnight.

Around 9:50pm, police received reports that a male pedestrian had been struck by a road train on the Stuart Highway approximately 4kms south of the Mataranka Cemetery.

The driver allegedly did not stop at the scene and continued driving before later contacting police about the crash.

Mataranka police attended the scene and located the deceased male, who is yet to be formally identified. The driver of the road train tested negative for alcohol and has had bloods taken at hospital to identify the presence of any drugs.  He is currently assisting police with inquiries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said “Major Crash and Katherine detectives are investigating the circumstances of this fatal crash.

The investigation is in the early stages and we would like to speak with anyone who saw any pedestrians or parked vehicles on the Stuart Highway south of Mataranka last night to make contact with police on 131 444. Please quote reference 24018276.”
