A 33-year-old man has been arrested following the assault of a female Aboriginal Community Police Officer (ACPO) in Galiwinku last night.

Police allege that a fight broke out between several members of the community at approximately 6.30 pm last night. Police attended and were able with the assistance of other community members to break up the disturbance however the female ACPO sustained injuries to her wrist and will be referred to the Nhulunbuy hospital for further examination.

The offender was taken into police custody and has since been charged with:

2 x assault police
1 x assault public servant
1 x resist arrest

He is due to appear in court today at Galiwinku.
