Police are investigating the serious assault of a 39-year-old woman in Nhulunbuy last night.

At about 10:15pm police were called to a large disturbance on Westal Street involving several intoxicated persons. Upon arrival members located an unconscious woman who was alleged to have been seriously assaulted by a male in the group.

Saint John Ambulance attended the scene and conveyed the woman to Gove Hospital where she remained over night before being evacuated to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment. The woman remains in a serious condition.

A 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody assisting with investigations.
