Arrest - Aggravated Assault Katherine

Katherine Police have arrested a 46-year-old woman in relation to an aggravated assault incident which occurred over night.

Police were called to a residence on Dowling Street at about 8:45pm after the offender allegedly attempted to assault two women with an axe.

The woman is alleged to have had a brief argument with her partner before attempting to assault two women with an axe. During the incident the woman is believed to have swung the axe at a 35-year-old female, missing her and striking a 3-year-old child to the head.

Members arrested the offender and conveyed her to Katherine Watch House.

The child was taken to Katherine Hospital and received treatment for a wound to her forehead before being released a short time later.

The offender has been charged in relation to the incident with the following offences and will appear in Katherine Court today:

3 x aggravated assault
3 x recklessly endanger serious harm

Detective Sergeant Tony Henrys says, "Violence of this nature could well have ended in tragic circumstances, again alcohol in our community can be directly attributed serious personal crime."
