Darwin Cup - Dont drink and drive

Police

It's that time of year again - the Darwin Cup Carnival is back and is expected to attract a crowd of up to 20 000 people to Fannie Bay Race Course this Monday.

While NT Police encourage everyone to have an enjoyable day at the Cup, racegoers can expect to see random breath testing stations set up at unusual times and simultaneously at multiple locations.

Having a drink at the races is all part of the fun, however if you decide to drink and drive you may not only lose your license, you could lose your life.

Police recommend racegoers take some simple precaution to ensure the day is safe and enjoyable:

organise to be dropped off and picked up from the races, OR
catch the FREE shuttle service to the city at the end of the day and leave your car behind. Visit www.nt.gov.au/transport/public/freeservices to view the timetable
drink mid-strength drinks
have a glass of water with every drink - stay hydrated
eat food and keep snacks on hand
keep your friends safe.

Sergeant Mark Casey said there will be a high police presence at the track and surrounding areas on Monday.

"Police will be conducting a number of RBT's at a number of locations on the day," he said.

"If you've only had a few and you're unsure about driving home - don't risk it".
