Drowning Death - Daly River

Northern Territory Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the death of a young man at Daly River Community.

Police received reports from community members of young men allegedly drink driving in a vehicle this afternoon.

Police located the vehicle and ascertained the vehicle was reported stolen last night from the Darwin area.

As Police approached the three males, they jumped into the river where one got into difficulty.

Another of the three males in the river dragged the one experiencing difficulty to the bank where Police attempted resuscitation without success.

The other two males involved in the incident did not sustain any injuries and are currently in Police custody assisting with their enquiries with regards to the stolen vehicle.

Police understand the three males, approximately 18 to 19-years-of-age, are not Daly River Community residents.

This death is being investigated by Major Crime Detectives on behalf of the Coroner as a death in custody as per the requirements of the Coroners Act.

There are no further information available in relation to this matter at this stage.

The exact cause of death will bde a matter for the Coroner.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner in due course.
