Drug bust –Tennant Creek

Police

A drug operation targeting suppliers in Tennant Creek has seen 1.6kg of cannabis seized overnight.

The operation was launched after drug dog Yona had a positive reaction to freight heading for Tennant Creek.

Members of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, the Dog Operations Unit and the Drug Intelligence Unit travelled to Tennant Creek and seized 1.6kg of Cannabis.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lauren Hill said the Cannabis was a high grade quality with a potential street value of almost $160,000 if sold in remote communities.

"This was a carefully executed operation involving members of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, Dog Operations Unit, Drug Intelligence Unit and members of the Tennant Creek Investigations Unit and it is certainly satisfying to see such a good result and to know that such a large amount of Cannabis has been taken off the streets of Tennant Creek - especially during the Tennant Creek Show weekend," Det Sen Sgt Hill said.

"I hope this seizure sends a clear message to all those who would try to traffic in illegal substances, that the risk of being caught is extremely high, especially with the checks the drug dogs perform on a regular basis."

Police inquiries are continuing and a 48-year-old man is expected to be summonsed in relation to the seizure at a later date.
