Drug dog operation –Tennant Creek

Police

Tennant Creek was the target of a two-day traffic and drug blitz this week.

Tennant Creek police in conjunction with the Southern Dog Operation Unit conducted two evening traffic and drug operations on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. During the Operation police tested 126 drivers for alcohol, with two testing positive and who were in the medium to low range.

Two vehicle defect notices were issued, one person will be summonsed for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and one driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice.

Barkly Superintendent Megan Rowe said the Operation also included random drug checks by one of the drug detector dogs.

"Police from the Dog Operations Unit in Alice Springs brought drug detector dog, Yona, to Tennant Creek for the Operation," Supt Rowe said.

"Yona proved his worth by detecting three separate vehicle occupants in possession of small amounts of Cannabis (total seizure 5.7 grams). Drug Infringement Notices were issued to those offenders. Police are nonetheless pleased that most drivers are observing the 'don't drink and drive' message and are not endangering other road users in our town and region."

Police will continue to mount special Operations using the drug dogs in Tennant Creek throughout the year.
