Drug Seizure - Mataranka

Police

Members from the Drug Enforcement Section, assisted by the Katherine Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and Dog Operations Unit, apprehended a NT registered Subaru Forrester station wagon outside the Mataranka Police Station yesterday afternoon.

The man admitted he was carrying a significant amount of cannabis in his vehicle and as a result a search of his vehicle was conducted.

Drug detector dog 'Leo' provided a positive response to the spare tyres and interior of the vehicle and a physical search was then conducted.

Police located a total of 2936 grams of cannabis hidden in two spare tyres that were secured to the vehicles roof rack, a small amount of cannabis under the front dash and a small clip seal bag containing 0.1 grams of methylamphetamine.

The offender was charged with the following offences:

Supply Schedule 2 drug - commercial quantity
Possess cannabis - commercial quantity
Posses dangerous drug in public place

Senior Sergeant Clint Sims said this was a great cannabis seizure and the second arrest connected to Operation Lambeth.

"The cannabis has an estimated street value of at least $146,800 if it had been sold in remote communities, where police believe it was destined to be sold," he said.

"NT Police will continue to target drug traffickers in an effort to reduce the availability and flow of cannabis to all remote areas of the Northern Territory."
