Road train crash –Barkly

Police

The Barkly Highway was closed for several hours last night and this morning following a road train crash 100 kilometres west of Avon Downs.

Police from Avon Downs and Tennant Creek attended the scene after two trailers carrying copper sulphate overturned blocking both lanes of the highway.

Police said the 67-year-old driver of the triple road train loaded with 57 tonnes of copper sulphate was travelling east on the Barkly Highway when he lost control of the vehicle causing the two rear trailers to overturn.

The two trailers were each carrying 20 tonnes of the material. Traffic was blocked for most of this morning until a crane and a cleanup crew could arrive from Mt Isa. At the time of this release, the clean up of the road and verges continue. Tennant Creek Fire and Rescue personnel are also at the scene, supervising the cleanup efforts.

Police have constructed a diversion track around the scene and motorists are now able pass through the area with caution. Disruptions may continue to occur during today but delays are expected to be brief.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
