Serious motor vehicle crash –Alice Springs

Police

A 22-year-old man is in hospital following a single vehicle rollover west of Alice Springs last night.

At around 8.30pm last night police were conducting a roadside breath testing station on Larapinta Drive approximately nine kilometres west of Alice Springs. A Holden Commodore which was travelling west was noticed speeding through the RBT station with the driver refusing to stop.

Police continued breath-testing motorists, however, a short time later they were advised there had been a crash about nine kilometres further up the road. They arrived and found the driver of the Holden Commodore which had earlier sped through the RBT station was pinned under the vehicle. His 16-year-old passenger had also been ejected from the car.

Both were taken to the Alice Springs Hospital where the teenager was treated for minor injuries and allowed to leave. The 22-year-old remains in a serious but stable condition.

Members of the Major Crash Investigations Unit are still investigating the cause of the crash, however they believe neither occupant of the car was wearing a seatbelt and speed was also a factor.

Police again urge motorists to ensure they always wear their seatbelts and abide by the speed limits.
