Warning for tourists –Alice Springs

Police

Police have issued a warning for tourists to stay off unsealed tracks in remote areas of Central Australia following several reports of stranded motorists this week.

A family of three was rescued from Boggy Hole in the Finke Gorge National Park after their Toyota Landcruiser and trailer became bogged. The family had been stranded since Monday.

NTES Volunteers from Alice Springs drove to Boggy Hole and managed to tow the four-wheel-drive out of the bog, however the vehicle's electrics failed and the family was transported back to Hermannsburg in the NTES vehicle.

Meanwhile, Kulgera police received a report of a number of vehicles stranded on the Old Andado track when flash flooding made the roads impassable. A pilot conducting an aerial patrol over Andado station raised the alarm when he located one group of six four-wheel-drive vehicles surrounded by flood waters. They had been stranded since Sunday.

Yesterday police received a further report of another group of six vehicles stranded in the same area.

Kulgera Police managed to contact one of the groups by phone and directed them to travel along the Colsen Track towards Numery Station Homestead. The second group managed to drive to Santa Teresa. Police have since received word that all vehicles have reached safety, however motorists are being urged to avoid the unsealed roads in Central Australia until conditions improve.
