Another Car Seized for Grog Running - Katherine

Police

Katherine Police have seized a Ford Falcon and arrested two people in relation to grog running on Tuesday night, 30 August.

Superintendent Danny Bacon of the Arnhem and Western Division said that a 35-year-old male driver was apprehended late in the night driving into Geyulkgan Ngurra Community in Katherine, a prescribed area.

“The vehicle was subjected to a search after it was observed that there was alcohol contained within the vehicle,” said Superintendent Bacon.

“In total Police located 29 cans of VB and 1.4 litres of Rum.

The driver and a 27-year-old male passenger were arrested and charged while a third male was issued with an infringement notice. Both of the arrested males have been bailed to appear in court at a later date.

“Eight vehicles have been seized for liquor related offences within just two weeks of the launch of the NT Government Grog Running campaign targeting a number of Territory Communities, including Katherine. There have been 43 vehicles seized so far in 2011 for liquor offences.

“Although this particular vehicle was seized after Police Officers searched the car within a prescribed area, the public are reminded to call the grog running reporting line, 1800 333 000 with any information relating to persons transporting grog into prescribed areas.

“The effects of grog running into prescribed communities have the potential to increase binge drinking and alcohol fuelled violence in communities. The actions of these individuals are a serious offence against the Geyulkgan Ngurra Community and the residents within the community.  Their vehicle has been seized with a consequence that it may be permanently forfeited and they further both face penalties which can include a maximum penalty of 6 months imprisonment.”
