Arrest for taxi driver assault – Alice Springs - 4691156

Police

Two people were arrested following an incident in Alice Springs overnight in which a taxi driver was assaulted and his car was stolen.

Police received a report just before 3am that a taxi driver had been threatened by one of his passengers at Hidden Valley Camp. The driver told police he had pulled up at Hidden Valley Camp and one of his passengers had demanded the driver take him into the camp. The driver refused and the passenger tried to wrestle control of the taxi from him. The 28-year-old driver told police he got out of his taxi when the man became aggressive, and began running up Sadadeen Road to where he had earlier seen a police car. As the victim ran towards police he looked back and found the taxi being driven straight at him by the passenger.

The driver of the taxi then did a u-turn when he saw police.

A police patrol of the area found the taxi a short time later. It was now being driven by a 38-year-old woman. The vehicle was pulled over by police in Plumbago Crescent and the female driver was arrested. The woman's co-offender, a 45-year-old male, was arrested this morning.

Both are expected to be interviewed later today.
