Arrests for traffic offences – Alice Springs

Police

Police in Alice Springs have been shocked by the number of drunk drivers and other traffic offenders detected in the past week.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said one of the worst drunk drivers arrested was a 33-year-old man who had to be woken several times during the breath analysis process.

"When we pulled this driver over on Undoolya Road on Thursday afternoon just after 4.30pm, this driver was so drunk he could hardly speak or stand. Then when we took him to the Watch house for a breath analysis he kept falling asleep before blowing .247 per cent."

Sgt Robertson said two people claiming to be the "Sober Bobs" for their group were pulled over on different occasions last week and found to have high blood alcohol readings.

"A 26-year-old woman was pulled over in the early hours on New Years Day and blew .154 per cent, while a 41-year-old man blew .164 per cent just before 4pm on Friday. The astonishing thing was they both claimed to be the Sober Bobs for the group."

Two women will also face court after being caught driving with unrestrained children in their vehicles.

A 19-year-old woman was pulled over in Wills Terrace just before 1.30pm on Tuesday when police noticed her driving with a three-year-old child unrestrained in the back seat.

A 26-year-old woman will face court after being caught driving with two unrestrained babies in the back of the car. The children were aged one year and nine months respectively.

A 38-year-old man will face court after being caught driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

"Police pulled him over just after 9.30am on Tuesday and found the Toyota Landcruiser troop carrier was also defective. It had two bald tyres, one of which had a cracked sidewall and numerous wheel nuts missing," Sgt Robertson said.

"There was also an adult passenger riding in the carry space with an unsecured wheel chair, kangaroo jack and jerry can. The situation was just a recipe for disaster.

"These incidents are all very worrying and were a pretty appalling start to the new year. Motorists need to be on notice that we will continue to be out there getting these irresponsible driver off the roads."
