Counterfeit money - Alice Springs

Police

Alice Springs Police area are warning businesses, shop owners and all residents to be wary following an incident involving counterfeit money this morning.

At 9:00 am it was reported to Police that a fake $100 note had been handed to a staff member in the McDonalds Drive Through in Alice Springs earlier this morning.

Senior Sergeant Michael Potts said that this is a timely reminder for people to be aware.

"I urge everyone to be wary, especially with $20, $50 and $100 notes as a counterfeit can be produced at any time. This is the first instance of this happening for some time, however it is highly likely that there are other notes either in use, or that soon will be.

"If you suspect a note to be counterfeit, please contact Police immediately.

"This staff member did exactly the right thing in notifying Police so soon after noticing the note was quite waxy to the touch and slightly narrower than an original. There were several other discrepancies however the most noticeable was the clear plastic window" he said.

The matter is now being investigated by the Australian Federal Police.
