Drink drivers - Alice Springs

Police

Police in Alice Springs caught nine drink drivers over the weekend including two who had unrestrained children in their cars.

The highest reading was that of a 21-year-old woman who was driving a Mitsubishi Magna sedan north along the Stuart Highway  near  Woods Terrace just after 1am on Saturday with a blood alcohol level of .165 per cent. She was charged with high range drink driving and driving unlicensed.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said of particular concern to police was that two of the drink drivers were transporting unrestrained children in their cars.

“As if it’s not bad enough to be drink driving and unlicensed, which both these drivers were, between them they had six children in their cars who were not wearing seatbelts.,” Sgt Robertson said.

“When we see drivers showing so little concern for the lives of their passengers and other road users it is very disheartening, but at least the fact they were both put off the road may have saved the lives of these children.”

Sergeant Robertson said police were also concerned that eight of the nine drivers caught did not have a current licence.

“It’s appalling to catch this number of drink drivers, but to then find out that most of them were unlicensed is very worrying. We will continue to target these irresponsible drivers and get them off our streets until they get the message. If you drink and drive you will be caught and if you’re unlicensed you will face the consequences when you go before the courts.”
