Drugs, Firearms seized on Tiwi Islands

Police

Drug and Organised Crime Detectives have conducted a series of raids in the Tiwi islands as part of an ongoing operation targeting the supply of cannabis to remote communities.

A total of 130 grams of cannabis, most in small deal bags, was seized in the raids along with five unsecured firearms.

Two .30 calibre weapons, one .308, one .22 and a shotgun were found unsecured with 65 rounds ammunition for the firearms nearby.

Superintendent Peter Schiller from the Drug and Specialist Crime Division said three people have been charged and two others summonsed for the offences.

“Detectives believe the cannabis has a street value of $19,500 if it were sold on the islands so it is a significant find.”

“The weapons were stored in an unsafe, haphazard way that could have been a recipe for disaster.  The combination of drug supply and firearms is of concern to us.”

“Police will continue to target the supply of dangerous drugs to remote communities.” Superintendent Schiller added.
