Drugs seizure –Alice Springs

Police

Two men will face a West Australian court following a drugs seizure in Alice Springs .

Members of the Alice Springs Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Dog Operations Unit seized 4.5kgs of Cannabis in Alice Springs as part of a two-week-long joint operation with police from Western Australia.

The seizure was made in Alice Springs on Friday February 18.

Following the seizure Western Australia Police executed a search warrant and seized a further 200 grams of Cannabis, 2 grams of Amphetamine and $10,000 in cash. Two men aged 22 and 26 were arrested and have been charged with numerous offences including possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Superintendent Michael White said the estimated value of the drugs was around $450,000 if sold in remote communities.

"This was an excellent result and a credit to the cooperation of police in both jurisdictions," Supt White said.

"This was a complex operation involving police from both the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Southern Dog Operations Unit from Alice Springs and police in Western Australia who ended up arresting the alleged offenders.

"Hopefully this will send a clear message to those trying to import drugs into the Northern Territory from other jurisdictions that the chances of getting caught are extremely high, especially given the sort of cooperation we regularly see between jurisdictions."
