Five 'lucky to be alive' after rollover

Police

Police are amazed that no one was killed when a car rolled on the Roper Highway on Saturday.

The 34-year-old male driver was flown to Darwin with serious injuries after he lost control of the sedan when negotiating a sweeping bend.  The vehicle has come to rest in a creek bed after rolling several times.

Four passengers have escaped with minor injuries.

Initial investigations have led police to believe the men had been drinking before attempting the drive back to the community of Ngukurr.

Remote Sergeant Anthony Jones from the Minyerri Police Station said one passenger has allegedly described the driver as being ‘blind drunk’

“It is fortunate that no one died or more people were not seriously hurt.

“We understand the men were in Ngukurr for a funeral, ironically for a person who had been killed in a car crash where alcohol was a contributing factor.

“If you know someone has been drinking, don’t get in the car with them.  If you can, get the keys and prevent them from driving,”  Sergeant Jones added.

Police investigations are continuing but it is expected that the driver will be charged with driving unlicensed and with drink driving offences.
