Flooding – Tennant Creek

Police

Police are urging all drivers in and around the Tennant Creek, Barrow Creek and Ti-Tree areas to drive with care due to some localised flooding.

The Stuart Highway south of Barrow Creek is cut in more than a dozen places by fast flowing flood waters from 300 - 700mms in height. This bars all two wheel drive vehicles from passage as those vehicles are likely to be swept away if attempts are made to cross them. Road closure signs are being erected and people are urged to take serious care even if crossing these areas in high clearance 4WD vehicles or trucks.

Superintendent Megan Rowe of the Tennant Creek and Barkley Operational Service Division said that it is not the depth of the water, but the strength of the current that is causing issues.

"Rain continues to fall in the area and these closures may continue until the morning. Drivers are warned not to take any chances with their lives or those of emergency service workers including police. The situation in Queensland should provide a clear enough example for anyone travelling. Do not risk your lives to get to a destination a few hours earlier. If you are travelling from Alice Springs or Tennant Creek and have yet to commence your journey, police recommend you stay put until the road is cleared. The Road Report phone line 1800 246 199 and is regularly updated and travellers are urged to contact this recorded service" she said.
