Ghost Net Located– Warruwi, Goulburn Island

Police

Yet another Ghost Net has been located in Top End waters, and retrieved, just off the coast of North Goulburn Island. The 'ghost net' was reported to NT Fisheries by Warruwi local, who, using local knowledge, later assisted Police with the retraction of the Ghost Net. Working under the coordination of NT Fisheries, Tasmanian Seafoods and Ocean Watch Australia, Warruwi Police ascertained the relevant details to execute a successful recovery of the net. Accompanied by the local who reported the net, Warruwi Police launched the Police Vessel King River at Fletcher's Point boat ramp at approximately 1345hrs Friday afternoon, and headed to the nets last known location. Due to poor conditions, with 25 knot winds and 2.5 metre swells, it took approximately 2 hours for the PV King River to reach the rogue net. After a combined effort of both Police members and their local accomplice, the net was finally freed from the ocean floor and lifted into the boat. The net was full sized and appeared to be an Indonesian fishing net weighing in excess of 200kg. Simon Xuereb from NT Fisheries commended the combined efforts of Warruwi Police and the local community. "This is an outstanding outcome of a collaborative effort to remove a ghost net from North Goulbourn Island. This highlights the local Police working with the community and industry to achieve a successful outcome. An extraordinary effort by all involved" he said. Warruwi Sea Rangers have now taken control of the net and will take samples of the net and arrange for its destruction. The local community member involved in the recovery of the net was applauded by both local police and NT Fisheries for his assistance in locating and retracting the net.
