Kava Intercepted – Australia Post - Winnellie

Police

30 Kilograms of Kava has been intercepted in a joint operation targeting the trafficking of Kava via the Darwin Mail Exchange. Working in conjunction with Australia Post, the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID) Detectives and Dog Operation Unit, based in Katherine, seized 30 kilograms of Kava yesterday. The kava was located in a number of packages addressed to Indigenous Communities in Arnhem Land. Since January this year SAID officers and other police personnel from remote stations in the Katherine command have intercepted approximately 100 kg of Kava in packages sent via Australia Post. Northern Dog Operations Unit maintains the only detector dog trained in the detection of Kava. Detective Sergeant Tony Henrys of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk in Katherine cited the damage Kava has on Indigenous communities. "Kava, like cannabis and alcohol, leaches hundreds of thousands of dollars a year out of Arnhem Land communities affecting the community and the children, and lines the pockets of interstate organised crime outfits. "We have identified people involved in the continuing distribution of Kava and are actively pursuing them." The street value of the substance intercepted in yesterdays' operation is approximately $120,000 if sold in remote communities.
