Leanyer House Fire Investigation

Police

Northern Territory Police are asking the public and service providers to report any groups of youths wandering the streets after dark, particularly in Darwin's northern suburbs.

This appeal coincides with an increase in police presence in Leanyer and surrounding suburbs, as investigations continue into the fatal fire on Murrabibbi Street that occurred in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

Frontline police, supported by mounted police and the dog operations unit, will ensure there is a highly visible police presence in areas where residents are feeling anxious or vulnerable as a result of recent events.

Police are encouraged by the response of Leanyer residents, who last night held a community meeting.

The meeting was extremely productive, with residents rallying together to look out for one another and vowing to get to know their neighbourhood.

"Such community based crime prevention programs aimed at the protection of property and personal safety have been extremely successful all over the world, as the public become the 'eyes and ears' of the police". Said Acting Assistant Commissioner Colleen Gwynne.

Northern Territory Police will strengthen their partnership with the community in the fight against crime to ensure the residents of Leanyer and the greater community feel safe and secure in their homes.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Gwynne stated that the Northern Territory Police will continue to provide a significant commitment to the investigation of the fatal fire that took the life of Frank Scannella and injured his wife, Jenny Scannella.
