New Weapon in the Fight Against Drug and Alcohol Running

Police

Northern Territory Police have a new weapon in the fight against drug and alcohol smuggling and criminal activity in remote communities.

Automated Number Plate Recognition technology will be fitted to Police vehicles in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.

The system captures an image of a vehicle’s number plate and triggers an alert if the car has been placed on a Police list of vehicles of interest.

“The technology will help Police track vehicles involved in suspected or known criminal activities, detect unregistered or stolen vehicles, identify people of interest or warrant targets associated with cars and help reduce drug and alcohol running in remote areas.” Said Regional Operations Assistant Commissioner Grahame Kelly.

The Federal Government has funded ANPR systems in Police vehicles in Katherine and Alice Springs, while the Territory Government has funded the system in the Darwin Police vehicle.

The system is already in use in other jurisdictions in the country.
