Operation McComb

Police

Elliott Police, with assistance from Katherine members conducted an operation this week, targeting heavy vehicles travelling between the two regions.

Police, and Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) Transport Inspectors, conducted Operation McComb from Monday 25 to Tuesday 25 July in the centre of Elliott.

In total, 496 drivers were breath-tested, returning no positive results. All vehicles, including 57 heavy vehicles and their trailers were also checked, with the MVR Transport Inspectors issuing nine Defect Notices.

One person also received a Traffic Infringement Notice for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Acting Superintendent Barkly region Craig Barrett said  this was a timely operation.

“With all the fatal and non fatal crashes that have occurred lately, Police chose to target heavy vehicles travelling on the Stuart Highway between Katherine and Tennant Creek after receiving information suggesting that a number of vehicles weren’t going over the ‘pits’ before setting off,” Acting Superintendent  Barrett said.

“It was a very good result, especially as the Operation provided no positive drink driving results from drivers.  I urge all drivers, especially those planning long trips, to make sure their vehicles are fully prepared for the journey ahead, to tell people where they’re going, don’t drink and get enough sleep prior to driving,  and always drive to the conditions.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to keep safe on the roads.”
