Police threatened with knife –Tennant Creek

Two police officers were threatened with a knife as they were in the process of apprehending an offender in Tennant Creek last night.

The man had allegedly stolen a pair of jeans from a business in Paterson Street a short time before. He was identified walking along Paterson Street a short time later and police were in the process of placing him in the back of a caged vehicle when he produced a knife and threatened them.

One of the police officers drew his gun while the other drew his Taser and they both ordered the man to drop his weapon. When he refused and continued threatening police one of the officers punched him to the jaw causing him to drop the knife. The offender was taken into custody without further incident and has been charged with:
Stealing
Resist police
Assault police
Possess, carry and use a controlled weapon
Attempt to escape from lawful custody.

He has been bailed to appear on the Tennant Creek Magistrates Court on March 15.
