Police are investigating an incident in which an ambulance had its windscreen shattered as it was transporting a patient to hospital last night.

Police received a report just before 9.30pm that a rock had been thrown through the windscreen by a man standing on the western side of Gap Road south of the Alice Springs Tourist Apartments.

Acting Senior Sergeant Michael Fields said the incident was extremely dangerous and could well have had tragic consequences.

"Rock throwing is a cowardly and dangerous act at any time, but to target an ambulance transporting someone to hospital is despicable and will simply not be tolerated. Not only did this action endanger the life of ambulance officers whose business it is to help people, but if also endangered the life of a vulnerable patient as well as other road users."

The offender is described as being a teenage youth of Aboriginal appearance wearing light-coloured clothing and a light -coloured baseball cap. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call police on 131 444.
