Search and Rescue - Bynoe Harbour

Police

NT Water Police initiated a search and rescue yesterday afternoon after receiving reports of a missing person at Bynoe Harbour.

It is believed three commercial crabbers were involved in an altercation in Bynoe Harbour at about 2:00pm yesterday where two men received injuries. As a result of the incident one of the injured men fled into mangroves behind Indian Island and became stranded.

Police immediately initiated a search and rescue operation led by Water Police and assisted by members from TRG and Humpty Doo Police. Whilst the search was underway, the Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra advised NT Police that an EPIRB had been activated in the Bynoe Harbour / Fog Bay area.

The 27-year-old missing man was located a short time later and was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital via Care Flight helicopter.

Senior Constable Michael Wyatt said everyone involved responded magnificently with great efficiency.

"This led to the location of the injured party and his recovery within a matter of three hours. I would like to sincerely thank all those who assisted in this operation."

Palmerston Investigations Unit has carriage of the investigation and is continuing their enquiries.
