Single vehicle crash -Darwin

Police

Police have again expressed their frustration with motorists following a single vehicle crash on Bees Creek Road south of Darwin last night.

Senior Sergeant Garry Smith said it appears the 40-year-old male driver of the Holden Commodore sedan was travelling outbound along Bees Creek Road about one kilometre from the Stuart Highway around 8.30pm last night when he lost control of the vehicle on a bend.

"It appears the driver was travelling at extreme speed and lost control of the car around a bend before crashing into a steel power pole. He sustained serious head injuries and his 25-year-old passenger escaped with minor injuries.
"I attended the scene and when I saw the side drifting tyre marks going for some 200 metres before impacting a power pole I found the scene nothing short of frustrating," Sen Sgt Smith said.
"How many times do members of the public need to see a 'copper's' head on media segments at traffic crash scenes pleading with people to slow down, drive to the conditions and think about what you are doing.
"I can honestly say that after examining the scene, no-one could give me a reasonable excuse for the actions of the driver in this case. They say a picture paints a thousand words but a thousand words cannot describe my frustration. Even a life and death situation being attended to by emergency services would not be justified in driving at extreme speeds like this. A trained driver, a racing car driver etc would shake their head at this scene.
"It must have been a horrible couple of moments from when the vehicle started drifting sideways to impact for all persons in the vehicle. "
The driver was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with serious head injuries. He remains in a critical but stable condition.
