Two women arrested for drugs - Alice Springs

Two women were arrested at the Alice Springs airport yesterday after allegedly flying in from Adelaide in possession of heroin, ecstasy and amphetamines following a joint Northern Territory Police and Australian Federal Police (AFP) operation.

The women, aged 38 and 44, were apprehended and searched after drug dog Yona reacted positively to them at the Airport terminal. Police from the Drug Intelligence Unit  and AFP found the 38-year-old in possession of 32 grams of methamphetamine while the 44-year-old woman was in possession of six grams of heroin and 3.5 grams of Ecstasy.

Senior Constable Gavin Hopwood of the Drug Intelligence Unit said  police executed a search warrant on the residence of the women with the assistance of the AFP.

“One of the women was  charged with firearms offences after we found an unsecured and unregistered air rifle at her home located in a wardrobe. We also found a quantity of drug paraphernalia,” Sen Const Hopwood said.

The 38-year-old has been charged with possession of a trafficable quantity of methamphetamine and the 44-year-old has been charged with possession of a trafficable quantity of heroin and ecstasy (MDMA) along with a number of firearms offences.

Both women have been bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on September 29.
