Weather watch –Alice Springs

Police

The Alice Springs Counter Disaster Committee will keep a watching brief on the Todd River following forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology of heavy rain and possible wind gusts in the Alice Springs region in the next few days.

The region is expected to receive up to 300 mm of rain and areas east of Alice Springs are expected to experience localised flooding. It is also expected that the Todd River will begin to flow and that several causeways will be inundated.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution and should the causeways be closed, residents are asked to stay away from the area if possible to avoid traffic congestion.

The Southern Region Counter Disaster Controller, Commander Anne-Marie Murphy, said regular updates would be issued throughout the next few days as circumstances change.

"At this stage it is still too early to tell how much rain we can expect, but residents can be assured that, if necessary, the Local Counter Disaster Plan will be implemented and that includes a flood plan.

"What we do know at this stage is that remote communities to the east of Alice Springs are expecting quite a lot of rain and that will probably lead to some localised flooding. The Barkly Regional Counter Disaster Group has been monitoring the situation and that will continue to ensure those communities are supported should the need arise.

"Meanwhile we would ask residents to take the usual precautions and clean up their yards to limit the damage in the event of severe winds, and ensure they have their emergency kits ready. This should include a battery-operated radio, first aid kit, food and clothing.

"Residents should also be reminded not to wade or swim in the water should the Todd River flow. Not only is this a health risk but sadly in the past people have lost their lives under those circumstances."
