Weather watch –Tennant Cree

Police

The Tennant Creek Counter Disaster Committee met this morning to discuss preparations for the possible heavy rain which may affect the town and region as the result of the remains of Tropical Cyclone Yasi.

Superintendent Megan Rowe said that whilst the Cyclone is expected to become a low pressure system by the time it reaches the Barkly Region, it has the potential to deliver a great deal of rain.

"That rain may cause localised flooding and road closures," Supt Rowe said.

"Police in remote Barkly communities have been talking to residents and organizations in these communties in order to best prepare for this event. For instance anyone who doesn't want to be inconvenienced by being isolated in the community or those who are frail or ill have been encouraged to make arrangements to travel to more regional centres such as Tennant Creek or Alice Springs, and make their own arrangements to stay with friends and relatives.

" There are no forced evacuations occurring and there is no current expectation of wide scale or long lasting flooding. It is expected that these rains may cause short term incovenience, road closures and community isolation. "

"Police are working with other agencies, both in Tennant Creek and in the outlying communities to ensure community safety and a quick return to normality once the rains pass.

Superintendent Rowe urged residents throughout the Barkly to keep appraised of weather advice on the Bureau of Meteorology website, listen to the radio or tune into TV for the latest updates.

"Make preparations for any possible isolation and for Tennant Creek residents, be patient and stay off the roads if possible when heavy rain is occurring."

At this time, rain as a result of this low pressure system is expected to commence in the early hours of Friday 4 February.
